complete mess.) And while WB's included Blu-ray does a surprisingly respectable job with the source material, this 4K disc beats it in every twist around the frequently wide sound stage. Other moments, such as a climactic showdown in the apartment's parking garage (where one Instead of focusing on the one man-god Bruce Campbell or somebody similar, Evil Dead Rise follows a single mother named Ellie who has three kids and is all living in a soon-to-be demolished high-rise apartment. The tattoo artist's money isn't rolling in, which is where the kids try and make any money they can to help out. Ellie's sister Beth comes to visit when an earthquake rattles Los Angeles and creates a hole underneath their high-rise. One of the children explores the hole and finds a crusty old book, some ancient artifacts, and some records, which of course, invite the horror to come. So it’s not exactly brimming over with supplementals. But we at least get something. The commentary is an easy, engaging listen – Cronin is so in love with the franchise that he’s a hugely enthusiastic talker – while the short film is nice little chiller about two men revisiting an abandoned fair ground where their friend disappeared a number of years before, a decent calling card for Cronin. For the week of June 25th, Warner Bros. Home Entertainment will release Evil Dead Rise on Blu-ray and 4K UHD. Other new releases on Blu-ray include Tales of the Walking Dead: The Complete First Season from RLJE Films, The Tank from Well Go USA and Big George Foreman ...

That native image lets us have some really sharp details, with even the finest of textures clearly visible, even through the gloom of the apartment. The intricacy of the make-up – especially in the eyes – is perfectly captured, as is the viscera of the corpses, both the live ones and the dead ones, the darkness of the setting not handicapping the sense of detail in any way. The cast does a great job with the delivery and physical demands that these roles bring. Especially the role of Ellie who is put through the ringer from start to finish. And for those that are looking out for Bruce Campbell - that wish will be granted in a pitch-perfect way that might cause this film to be in a multi-verse of sorts. Evil Dead Rise is a fun, horror film with rivers of blood, carnage, and scares. It's a worthy addition to the franchise that sets up more films. Hopefully, the next go-around will examine the dark comedy that these films have delivered so well before. For his first big main feature film, Lee Cronin is assisted by Rob Tapert, Bruce Campbell, and the Raimi brothers in making sure this Evil Dead Risemovie is scary, bloody, and gobs of fun while introducing new characters and settings. Usually, these films take place in a remote cabin with adults looking for a small romantic getaway. With this new sibling successor, the location is transported to a condemned high-rise building in Los Angeles with young kids the primary focus of the ensuing carnage. These elements haven't really been fully explored before in this realm, but Cronin keeps its pacing tight and the horror at an all-time high throughout the movie. close to unwatchable. I'll give it a warm 3.75/5 overall, yet this is a tough one to grade objectively and, for the most part, those not interested in 4K And so Lee Cronin’s fifth entry starts off exactly where you would expect it – in a cabin. In the woods. And its one of his few stumbles in an otherwise brilliantly propulsive, claustrophobic and brilliantly bloody take on the classic Deadites. While there’s nothing wrong per se with the cold open here – it feels VERY Sam Raimi both in terms of its execution and its unbridled glee at the bodily carnage being meted out - it’s a clunky plot beat that actually bears no real link to the main story. While obviously a clear nod to Deadites past, it feels too much like a safety blanket, almost as unsure as some of its audience in the upcoming change of scenery and it contributes to the film’s only real issue – it’s pacing in the first act. In 1981 Director Sam Raimi essentially created a genre of film – the horror movie…with a comedic twist. This genre has been played out, but films like the original Evil Dead movies, An American Werewolf in London and so on – all embraced it. Fans of Raimi’s Evil Dead films no doubt know the excitement of watching the hero as he battles the forces of evil – with a chainsaw for a hand. But those films had their time and with 1993’s Army of Darkness, it might be argued that these came to an end. But no, thank you Hollywood, you’ll never let anything die and we got a new chapter in 2013 as well as a television series. And now we’ve got Evil Dead Rise, a film that shares the same name as the aforementioned titles but…that’s about it. Was it worth the wait? Is it more of the same? Or is this just yet another excuse to cash in on an already overdone genre with a familiar title? But while you can take the gore-soaking, eye-gouging, limb-ripping and now, horrifically, cheese-grating ( Note: technically, that should be skin-grating…) out of the woods, seems like you can’t quite take the woods out of the…you get my drift.
