One of those rarest of books: so beautiful I almost couldn't bear it, and so moving I was reading through tears' STACEY HALLS Author of bestselling children’s novel Lenny’s Book of Everything, Karen Foxlee has a gift for portraying vulnerable child protagonists. Her latest is anchored by a fantasy that invokes the sort of nurturing environment reality fails to provide. She lives in Orkney, with her husband and son. When not juggling writing, full-time care, and genetic illness, she can be found where the wild weeds grow, growing her apothecary garden. All My Wild Mothersis her debut memoir, and was published in 2023 (Two Roads Books). At it's heart, it is a coming of age story. But it's so much more than that. It's about the circular nature of life, it's about how disappointments come but also wonderful things, but mostly it's about girls and women and mothers, and the wonderful relationships between them all.Prismatically beautiful in its honesty and telling, this book is a radical act of quiet rebellion. Staking a claim of belonging, loving and nurturing on unsure, uncertain ground - whether that's a life, home or land - and making a bewitching alchemy of it. Ah, isn’t it wonderful when a book crosses your path and it goes into your top reads – ever?! I can safely say this was a deliciously uplifting, perceptive and beguiling novel that kept me entertained throughout. It is sad, too, and there is a really heartfelt story of loss and a search for roots. The story is told from Eva’s perspective, from her wisely attuned observations as a child, right through to adulthood and all the ways in which she embodies a mother on the search for her own. It’s told, too, through letters to the lovely Bridget and the gorgeous Blume family as a whole, as well as through the whimsical presence of Carrie and hilarious Sister Ana. The Lodge by Sue Watson, psychological thriller set in snow-blown Cornwall (Kynance Cove). #Audiobook Why do it, Fiona? Why...

All My Mothers is a book about a young girl named Esther and her journey to discover her cultural identity. Esther's mother, who had been born in Germany, died when she was young, leaving her with only fragments of her German heritage. Esther embarks on a search for her mother's past, which leads her to uncover the stories of Jewish survivors from World War II and their struggles to rebuild their lives after the war. Along the way, Esther learns to appreciate and embrace her own identity as both German and Jewish. The narrative structure of All My Mothers provides an interesting exploration into the past and present lives of its protagonists. Recommended Reads about Race, Racism, and Demarginalizing History - Necessary Non-fiction You Should Read for Life-changing Insights and Impact All My Mothers is a powerful story of resilience and identity that highlights the strength of familial bonds. When her parents’ relationship crumbles, Eva begins a journey to find these answers for herself. Her desire to discover where she belongs leads Eva on a journey spanning decades and continents – and, along the way, she meets women who challenge her idea of what a mother should be, and who will change her life forever…A moving tale... sure to make you cry... Parfait [is] a convincingly serious, sweet, clever and funny person who ends up carrying the story... an epic hero ... It's going to be all over every book club in Britain before you can say Burundi' The Times Eva has suspicions about her family and raises numerous questions and does some investigating throughout. This goes on for a number of years, along the way we meet some lovely characters and families and one or two not so lovely characters. It’s an immersive story, at times it’s joyful and happy but also at times it’s painful. I just loved it. Eva (as in forever, not evil, she tells us early on) is searching for something. She knows that something is missing but isn’t entirely sure what. She just knows that she doesn’t belong in her family. This book chronicles her life and her desire to find love and happiness. Eva makes wonderful friends and I loved them all. Victoria Bennett is a disabled and chronically-ill poet, author. Her writing spans poetry, memoir, non-fiction and games-based storytelling, and she has She written and talked extensively on grief, care, and writing through times of change.

I missed the author's debut novel when it was originally published, but I'm going to remedy that very soon. If it's half as good as this one, it will be wonderful. Eighty-one-year-old Ruth Morris faces the dispiriting prospect of selling her house and moving into an aged care home, Banksia House, at the behest of a son unwilling to care for her. Always fiercely independent, Ruth has difficulty adjusting. And when she finds out that her best friend, Gladys, is dying in Brisbane, she joins forces with new friends she has made – the indomitable Beryl and the Houdini of Banksia House, Keith – to hatch an escape plan. Joanna Glen weaves a uniquely heartening and hopeful story. A story about pain, the solace of words and our search to belong, to a place, to a person. Welcome to the world of the wonderful Augusta Hope' Jess Kidd, author Himself and Things in Jars If you want a beautiful book about motherhood, all the dimensions of it from the POV of a daughter, this is delightful. The innocence of a child who doesn't understand why her mother's negligence and her father's abandonment. The loneliness and deseprate pursuit of validation and love of a teenager, and the understanding and resolution of adulthood. All of these eras painting a beautiufl and deep portrait of motherhood.I loved how the author weaved the story, you grow into it as Eva grows up. We sometimes see where the journey is going, and sometimes we don't, but Eva is a truthful narrator to both herself and her subjects. She is at times, not terribly likeable, but she is believable and three dimensional.
