About this deal

Decathlon’s Compact Folding Dry Toilet comes with a lid and is used with a 40-50l toilet bag and sawdust (bought separately). As compact and portable as this toilet looks, you will be amazed at how effectively it performs. The Camco 41544 travel toilet is a sleek and lovely toilet that will be easy to use and dispose of. Like Luggable Loo, this is a 5.3 gallons toilet with a detachable tank and features a 4-gallon flush tank capacity. The pumping-flushing action is very effective as it cleans the bowl leaving it clean after every use. In addition, it has a swivel dumping elbow that makes waste removal to be fast and easy. Camco is the best portable toilet for the van. Some things in life shouldn’t be complicated too much. The Carplife Bivvy Loo takes that mantra and applies it to one of life’s essential processes. The end result is a camping toilet which does its job well, can be folded away unobtrusively and renders the ‘end product’ biodegradable too – we love the simplicity of it. As mentioned many times on Camping Secrets, we love our little Mercedes campervan . However it does not have an on-board loo which can limit the places we can stay – step forward the Thetford Porta Potti Qube 335 which measures only 31.3 x 34.2 x 38.2 cm and works really well.

A flushable camping toilet is on the more luxurious end of portable toilets. The Thetford’s Porta Potti range has some great portable flushing camping toilets that consist of two parts. The upper section is a combined flush-water tank and toilet bowl with a detachable seat and cover, and the lower section is the waste holding tank. The two sections come apart easily, allowing you to empty the waste conveniently and hygienically.

Should you get a camping toilet?

The composting toilet is an eco-friendly alternative to the classic chemical toilet. It’s a ‘dry toilet’ so requires no water or chemicals. Also referred to as a ‘urine-diverter’, composting toilets work by separating solids from liquids, directing each to a specific container for easier management and odour control. It probably goes without saying you should only put human waste down your toilet. Disposable nappies, wipes or any other similar items should never enter the system. Options range from regular commode liners to compostable toilet bags such as these by Better Boat . Most chemicals should kill bacteria, control odour, reduce gas build up and mask any foul smells with perfume. They should also break down wastage, making it easier to empty the cassette. The type of portable toilet you have can make or break your camping trip. On a broader level, there are three types of camping toilets:

They tend to be quite bulky, so you’ll need to ensure you have enough space in your car to transport one. Be careful; you should not touch the garbage at any time. Take a hose pipe and attach it to the outlet valve of the toilet. The outer section has a lid which allows access to the inside where the action takes place. There are also a couple of carry handles for moving the toilet around. If the Air Head is on the large side, another option, recommended by boat owner Andrew Polson is the Simploo Waterless Composting Toilet, which is made in the UK. Whichever toilet you choose, take time to read the instruction manual and make sure you understand how to use it effectively. This could make the difference between a pleasant holiday and a rather smellier one.Portable toilets come in all shapes and sizes and you need to decide quite early on in the buying process what exactly you are looking for. Do you want a toilet to hide away, or do you want it to feel more sturdy and closer to the comforts of home?

The first rule of chemical toilets is that you must only empty them in a specifically designated place. Apart from the obvious hygiene issues, the chemicals should not go straight into the sewerage system. It’s a substantial portable toilet and made of very rugged plastics which give a reassuring feel to sit on. It can take a weight of 200kg which is over 30 stones – no problem even for the biggest campers. There are no chemicals in play at all which helps our water systems avoid getting contaminated. Portable flush toilets need chemicals. You need pink chemicals for the flush-water tank to remove grime and eliminate odour, and blue and green chemicals in the waste tank to break down waste and remove gas build-up. There’s not much to say which isn’t positive about this great loo. If you’ve got the space then go for it. However for most of us who are cramming our cars and campers to the brim before setting off, it probably is a little excessive in size, especially if the place you’re going to already has toilets. In the end that has to be your decision, but my friend has one and I don’t – and that’s irritating!

What are toilet chemicals and why do I need them?

Originally made for anglers, it’s been a gamechanger for wild campers, festival goers and overland drivers. It contains 12 compostable liner bags with sachets of powder, each capable of turning up to 2 litres of waste into manageable gel, plus 40 biodegradable wipes. Additionally, the toilet is ruggedly constructed and has no external water or power connections. It also has a vent and wastewater tank level indication. You won’t experience any odors or leaks as it has a double-sealed drain valve that protects it. Features They are supplied in boxes of 20 and work out at just over 50p per bag,” he says. “The liner fits perfectly around the rim of the toilet bowl and comes with an absorbent gel pad which will absorb up to 600ml of urine.”

With a seat height at 45cm, it’s on the large side, but that could also be a bonus for extended stays and those not able to squat down low. Odours are removed with a 12V fan which can be powered by a 12v battery, solar panel or plugged in to the mains with a 230v adaptor. To enhance comfort and improve hygiene, the toilets should be equipped with an odour elimination system. They should also contain enough consumables such as soap and toilet paper that should be replaced frequently. The Carplife loo was originally designed for anglers (hence ‘carp’) but can equally be commandeered by the camping brigade. There is a garbage holding tank with a porta-potty. You have to remove the lid of the tank to make it empty.Apart from that, the toilet comes with an adult seat and lid that provides comfort and safety to the different users. One of the exceptional features of this toilet is its powerful push-button pressurized flush that clears contents and leaves the bowl looking sparkling clean. Features This loo has recently been redesigned after some owners reported a bad seal between the lid and seat, but our review unit was strong and very comfortable to sit on (mind the silent ‘h’ there). Height is an excellent 41cm off the ground and so you don’t feel like a naughty kid conducting toilet training.
