Lofton describes eight characteristics of destructive mind-control cults, saying, “If any group exercises all eight of these control elements, they are, in fact a destructive mind control cult”. The founder will always enjoy a special role in a new movement, but he should be bound to the common customs, disciplines, and constitutions of the community. Based on the evidence presented, it is evident that Catholicism does not fit the definition of cult. The Bible clearly and consistently states that receiving Jesus Christ as Savior, by grace through faith, grants salvation (John 1:12; 3:16,18,36; Acts 16:31; Romans 10:9-10,13; Ephesians 2:8-9). Thus the Church does not want simply to come to the aid of these Christians, but also to spur them to works of devotion, penance, and charity.

The official position of the Roman Catholic Church is that a person must believe in Jesus Christ AND be baptized AND receive the Eucharist along with the other sacraments AND obey the decrees of the Roman Catholic Church AND perform meritorious works AND not die with any mortal sins AND etc. They are trying to say that the ends — protecting a brainless embryo and fetus that might, only might become a person — justifies forcing a woman to carry that fetus against her will.Over the centuries, there were, of course, actual heretics who espoused false doctrines contrary to God’s Word. As the current modern culture inundates us with entertainment that degrades the human person in a wide variety of ways, it is more important than ever to spend time on entertainment that reinforces our pro-life values as Catholics. It would be hard to avoid the label on encountering (as I did, carrying out field work last year) 20 people toiling unpaid on a Christian farming compound in rural Wisconsin – people who venerated their leader as the closest thing to God’s representative on Earth. Indeed, any religion involving unconditional worship and unquestioning obedience to God could be labeled as a cult (using the derogatory suggestion of the word), since such a religion would have that high level of dependency, obedience, and unwavering compliance ascribed to cults by definition.

Marie-Paul Giguere, the foundress of this organization, acted upon what she claimed was special revelation. The anti-cult networks believed that cults brainwashed their members (the idea of mind control, as scholars such as Margaret Singer point out, originated in media coverage of torture techniques supposedly used by North Korea during the Korean War). Her books include Social Creature (2018), The World Cannot Give (2022) and Self-Made: Creating Our Identities from Da Vinci to the Kardashians (2023), and she is currently working on a history of magic and modernity.

Excommunication has always been the “big stick” in the arsenal of manipulative tools available to Roman Catholicism.
