The band decided to release a live album after their producer Tony Visconti did not have enough time to work on a full studio session. On November 23, 1976, just a week after the three Hammersmith shows, Brian Robertson got involved in a skirmish while defending his Scots soul singer pal Frankie Miller at The Speakeasy Club in London’s West End. The super deluxe edition of Live And Dangerous finally puts to bed the myth that the album was extensively overdubbed in the studio and proves that Thin Lizzy was not only at the top of their game night after night but was one of the best live bands of the 1970s.

Some pressings of the record sleeve include a montage photograph in the studio containing a mirror, straw, razor blade and a rolled up five pound note (as an overt reference to cocaine consumption). But it's not all about these tracks, the other tracks aren't here as fillers, and while the writing and playing quality is high throughout special mention needs to be made of the beautiful "Southbound" and the sublime seven minutes of "Still In Love With You" from the "Bad Reputation" and "Nightlife" albums respectively. Whenever there is a poll of the greatest live albums of all time, the original album is always there. As well as the full album, remastered by Andy Pearce and Matt Wortham, it featured two additional tracks from the period that were not originally included on the album (although they were later released on the Killers Live EP in 1981). Disc five originally released, in abbreviated form, as Still Dangerous (Live At The Tower Theatre Philadelphia 1977) in 2009.To celebrate the anniversary, the album will be released as a definitive 8-CD super deluxe version featuring a newly remastered version of the original album alongside all of the gigs recorded for Live And Dangerous. A four-way miracle, really, given that Lynott’s mother Philomena would set about it with Fairy Liquid whenever Lizzy docked at her Manchester hotel, The Clifton Grange. Concurrently, Lizzy’s attempts to break America touring March 1976’s Jailbreak on the back of US Number 12 hit The Boys Are Back In Town had just come to nought when, sick and yellow-eyed with hepatitis, Lynott had been forced to quit the tour and fly home.

In 2022, a deluxe box set of the album was released, containing the original live recordings that made up the album.

The super deluxe edition of Live And Dangerous finally puts to bed the myth that the album was extensively overdubbed in the studio, and demonstrates that Thin Lizzy was one of the best live bands of the 1970s. But since Visconti had a very tight schedule Phil Lynott came up with the idea that they spend two weeks together compiling a live album instead. It won’t change the face of music or knock the world off its axis, but Hell, Fire And Damnation is yet another damned fine addition. Due to technical problems and production issues with certain tracks on the night of the show, not all discs have been presented as a complete concert. Thin Lizzy biographer Mark Putterford believes the majority of recordings on the finished album are from the Hammersmith show.

A pair of shows recorded in Philadelphia, and a night in Toronto feature the likes of the title track, the funky Dancing In The Moonlight, and set opener Soldier Of Fortune from it. Don’t hesitate – it’s a testament to the band’s enduring legacy and a showcase of their incredible talent. The final disc features the band ripping through the full album in London in 1978, without overdubs. All the rumours of the album being tweaked in the studio are about to be laid bare because now we can hear each night in its entirety! It was also the last Thin Lizzy album to feature guitarist Brian Robertson, [a] who left the band shortly after its release. Stephen Thomas Erlewine of AllMusic described the album as "one of the best double live LPs of the 70s", and "a true live classic", containing more energy and power than the original studio albums. A single from the album, "Rosalie / Cowgirl's Song" backed with a live version of "Me And The Boys", which was a frequent encore but not included on the album, was released in April and reached No.
