People who see what I’m up to on Goodreads probably noticed that I read one autobiography by Drew Barrymore after another. You can change your choices at any time by visiting Cookie preferences, as described in the Cookie notice. I snapped up this book as soon as it came out in paperback and have read and re-read it more times than I can count.

I do not have positive relationships with any of my family, and have had a background of abuse in many forms, and (probably because of this) turned to alcohol and drugs. No one can save Drew her from herself except Drew, and this fourteen year old superstar in the final analysis is frighteningly isolated and on her own. I wish she'd go back and do an update, of course, if I were Drew, I would want to edit out the pictures of me with the Coreys.

Instead however I had to make all my own mistakes and now I think maybe I should have paid more attention to her memoir. Someone on a blog I read mentioned this book, so I finally got around to picking it up even though it's very old and very out dated. Did you know that when Elliott is trying to make Gertie believe “only kids can see” ET and she rolls her eyes and says “Gimmee a break,” that was all Drew? I am 23 now, am an alcoholic and recovering drug addict, and have been in and out of psychiatric hospitals (which I think really helped me relate to Drew's experiences of being in hospital). This is her story of why she took refuge from her unhappy young life in parties, alcohol and drugs, and her difficult and painful rehabilitation. Because really, eleven-year-olds don’t ordinarily snort lines of coke in the bathrooms at Studio 54 if they’re being supervised.
