In the current age in which we find elusive distinguishing a mere male from an actual man, this book is not only a must-reading, but also what I deemed it a whole university course, so to speak. This inspiring, popular book has been speaking to the hearts of men for the past 10 years, and its words are still relevant. This book is rich with resources for further reading and a lot of great practical tips for the disciplines. He points out the statistics of the amount of TV people watch on a daily basis as compared to the relatively small amount spent reading. Well, it's taken me over 4 to come back to it, but it once again was a great challenge, full of practical insight, and covering a broad range of life.

The man who carries on an act of impurity is not simply breaking a human code, nor even sinning against the God who at some time in the past gave him the gift of the Spirit.

Discipline is a subject about which the Scriptures say much―but contemporary authors have been peculiarly silent. that he might sanctify her, having cleansed her by the washing of water with the word, so that he might present the church to himself in splendor, without spot or wrinkle or any such thing, that she might be holy and without blemish. To be fair, he spends the last 6 pages or so speaking on the disciplines in the context of grace and warning against legalism. There are some books, though very few, that remain ‘evergreen’—that through the years remain as useful and challenging as the day they were written. I also appreciate the book recommendations near the end of each chapter and Those given by many of the pillars of our faith near the end of the book.

But through a vast majority of the writing it comes across as though he is making a long spiritual to-do list that causes more burden than freedom, which is what the disciplines are really for. This newly revised edition is for every man who wants to know what it means to be a Christian in today's world. The difference between legalism and discipline is one of motivation: legalism is self-centered; discipline is God-centered. In his book, Kent Hughes seeks to address this problem at its starting point, the area of spiritual discipline for the average Christian man. Thankfully I had such a father and so the book wasn't as groundbreaking for me as it has been for some of my friends.

Rich in practical advice and practical wisdom, full of Biblical examples and how they relate to maturing spiritually, and the author does an excellent job laying out basic principles and simple straightforward steps any person can take to grow in their relationship with Christ. There are also Bible reading plans (including M'Cheyne, which I recommend), helpful Proverbs regarding speech, hymns, choruses, and praise Psalms. einen göttlichen, einen voll maskulinen Mann ausmacht, schmeiss Men's Health weg, das hier ist das Ultimative, mit allem drum und dran.
