As I mentioned, I read this book when I was ten and now twelve years later this book was still beautiful. The day begins with an experience of the Blitz – we deliberately make this noisy and monotonous so that it doesn’t glamorise what was an uncomfortable and unpleasant aspect of war time life in the cites. Even before he realised that Willie was sensitive and traumatised, Mister Tom was never mean, it was simply part of his nature to be blunt.

But as Willie enjoys his first ever taste of human kindness, suddenly his happiness comes under threat again… This heartwarming classic tells a moving and memorable tale of friendship against all the odds, set against a stunning wartime backdrop. But I'm glad it was a book which brought those questions on, and that for me shows just how timely and important 'Goodnight Mister Tom' is, and why it has stood the test of time. Furious to hear about his association with the Jewish Zach and to see William speak for himself, she accuses him of blasphemy and knocks him unconscious. Slowly but surely, with Mister Tom’s kindness and wisdom, and the help of the good people in the nearby community, Willie begins to flourish. As time goes by Tom begins to worry when Willie doesn't answer his letters, so he goes to London to find him, and there makes a terrible discovery. This resource by Royal Institution encourages children to look at the history and continued development of the telephone. She took inspiration from a song in Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat, which lists lots of colours: the green and brown in the song made her think of a young boy and an old man, and the idea was born.

He learns to love a world he never knew existed, a world of friendship and affection in which harsh words and daily beatings have no place. My heart warmed with every little gesture of kindness that shocked himself at how willing he was to adjust his life for William's well-being. It's one of those books that grows up with you, that you come back to again and again even when you're an adult.A sad, deprived child, he slowly begins to flourish under the unlikely care of grumpy old Tom Oakley. A book with a cover deemed “boring” by children is going to live a sad life in the library, a life of watching other (perhaps lesser) books get checked out thanks to their snazzy, eye-catching covers while it sits on the shelf, eventually getting weeded due to low circulation.
