Although readers are meant to feel for the two main characters as one struggles with PTSD and the other is a sleep deprived Mother with a husband who is clueless. This is an addictive thriller packed with secrets and lies with a twist that will knock you sideways. An unbelievable story line where an intelligent career woman nearly dies for somebody she meets at 3am in a London park! Mary is on maternity leave from her job as an attorney and caring for her two young children with little help from her husband.

One night whilst soothing the cries and demands of her children, she is looking out the window when she sees something. Although I don't suffer from PTSD, I’m a worrier and often have difficulty getting to sleep because my mind wants to revisit every single negative situation I can imagine.

McGowan does a good job ramping up the suspense as the good intentions of two people unable to sleep turn into a quest for justice. They both appear to have witnessed a woman being savagely attached in a nearby house that is supposed to be empty as it is being renovated.

I guess i thought it would be more based around the friendship between the neighbors and their insomnia. And when they see news reports of a missing woman who was last seen walking alone not far from them, the pair are convinced it’s her they saw being attacked—no matter what the police say. After getting skepticism and no help whatsoever from the police, these two barely functioning adults decide the best course of action is to amateur sleuth this thing in the most ill-advised ways possible that get them in trouble over and over again, because that's what intelligent adults do. These two are separately looking out the window one night and think they see something sinister occurring in one of the (abandoned) homes across the street. Unfortunately, this just didn't grab my attention in a meaningful way, so I ended up putting it down at 11%. For Mary it's a chance to have something for herself outside of motherhood, whilst for Tim, it's the first time he's been interesting in anything (apart from stalking his ex-wife) for a long time. Her narrative at the start was a bit much and seemed more like a chaotic day in the life of rather than the mystery of Samantha Ellis.

I have liked other books from this author quite a bit more than this, so I look forward to her next one. Despite my complaints, I did want to see how things wrapped up rather than DNF’ing it, so there was enough intrigue to keep me turning pages. I think Mary could be the lead in more books and I’d love to see how the author would continue to evolve her.We don’t share your credit card details with third-party sellers, and we don’t sell your information to others. Although I have always found the author's previous works enjoyable, I cannot include this one in my list of recommendations. However, the story often lags, with a slow pace and some less-than-believable behavior by not only Tim and Mary, but by other characters as well (including Mary’s husband). There's maybe a bit of slow start as the author gets all the players in place, but even wondering how they'd all connect kept me turning the pages and before long I couldn't stop turning the pages. Two incompatible characters just happen to both see the same suspicious activity in the middle of the night and decide to solve the mystery of what may or may not be a missing girl.
